Together as a family… “We’re all in the same boat. If it sinks, we’re all going down.” That is what my father says when times get tough. If one suffers, the rest of us do too because we don’t like to see the other go through pain.
Remember… I was always told to remember my moral standards. This quote from my dad is the one that stands out the most. “Respect yourself, because if not, the rest won’t respect you. How you act, and how you look, is how they’ll treat you. It’s only advice. It’s your choice if you want to take it or not.”
Assimilate… Even though it is difficult to migrate from one’s own country, it is kept in mind that it’s important to get accustomed to the ways of a new country. Assimilating is hard because you leave behind what you have always known, to then get that completely turned around.
Desire… I desire a better life for my family, but especially for my father and brother. Due to my brother’s disability, my father has had to work twice as hard for him. My brother will get older, so taking care of him will be more difficult for my mother. I desire to go to college for them so that I can give them a life with fewer difficulties.
Initiative… My parents tell me that if I want something, it’s my responsibility to go out there and get it. I should not be waiting for life to just bring it to me. College is one of those things, and I know that if I grasp that opportunity, I won’t let it go. I am going to be the first one to go to college within my nuclear family, but with the overall family, I’ll be the third. I will take the initiative to make it there!
Treasure… This is an important word for me. There are so many things that I value, or treasure. I treasure the good and bad moments I have lived. Without the bad things, there would be nothing good to appreciate.
Inspiration… Music is my great inspiration. But not just any music! It’s the music from which my roots are. It inspires me to sing my sorrows and dance my frustrations away…. and it’s that same music that reminds me where I come from.
Oracion (prayer)… Whenever I find myself in a desperate situation where I feel like nothing will solve my problems, I turn to a prayer. When all else is failing, faith is the one last thing that keeps standing.
Nationality… Even though I was not born in Mexico, but rather here in the United States, I consider myself of double nationality. I don’t know the English language fully, but I don’t know the Spanish one either. The same goes to all the traditions of either here, or in Mexico. But it’s a unique thing because I can have a combination of both to make a new tradition.
