“Doctor’s appointment? Unless someone is dying we are not going to the doctor.” The number of times that I’ve heard this throughout my life are countless. Although money was always tight, it was never really about the cost of a doctor’s visit. I know that they wanted me to realize that just because I have doctors didn’t mean that I had to abuse the privilege and accommodate myself to this privilege. Grandma’s remedy worked just as well, or even better than a doctor’s visit. A good ol’ homemade tea and a decent meal was sure enough to fix any ache. I wouldn’t be as tolerant, resistant, or even as strong, if it wasn’t for this simple lifestyle choice that I was raised with.
